Leghvtakhevi Canyon

Project Information

Leghvtakhevi Canyon, located in the heart of Old Tbilisi within the National Botanical Garden, is one of the city’s most popular natural attractions. With steep 25-meter rock walls, picturesque waterfalls, and year-round tourist activity, the area faces a constant risk of rockfall. Recognizing this, the National Botanical Garden of Georgia commissioned Caucasus Science and Engineering (CSE) to carry out a comprehensive site investigation and develop a protection concept that balances public safety with the preservation of the canyon’s natural beauty. Our team applied a multi-phase investigation program, including UAV drone surveys, photogrammetric 3D modelling, detailed engineering-geological mapping, and advanced rockfall simulations. These methods allowed us to identify ten critical detachment zones across the northern and southern rock faces, analyze block size distributions, and model potential rockfall trajectories and energies. By combining high-resolution geospatial data with site-specific hazard classification, we created a precise geotechnical model of the canyon’s instability risks. Based on these results, CSE developed a conceptual protection design that integrates both primary and secondary measures. Proposed solutions include point-supported steel mesh systems to stabilize larger blocks, localized rock bolting and underpinning for overhanging sections, and strategically placed rockfall and roll-protection fences to safeguard footpaths and viewing platforms. The design follows international standards (ONR 24810, Eurocode 7) and was modelled entirely in 3D to ensure technical feasibility while minimizing visual impact on the heritage landscape. This project demonstrates CSE’s expertise in combining advanced geotechnical analysis with practical engineering solutions for complex urban heritage sites. By enhancing visitor safety while maintaining the canyon’s unique natural environment, CSE contributes to the sustainable management of one of Tbilisi’s most iconic destinations.
