The slopes east of Lake Lisi between Machavariani Street and Mtkwari River are a site of heavy construction including large cuts as well as backfillings of valleys. According to the "Tbilisi Territorial Geological Hazard Zone Map" of the National Environmental Agency (2019), the area is mainly classified as "high hazard zone" [U 1]. During March 2021 serious slope failures at a large scale occured above Machavariani Street with high rates of deformation (~4 cm/day).
Geological study and risk assessment of Mestiachala HPP area hit by severe flood in Mestia, the Georgian region of Svaneti.
The landslide disaster took place on 13th to 14th of June in 2015 after a period of heavy rainfalls. With other catastrophic effects, was destroyed Tskneti-Samadlo- and the Tskneti-Akhaldaba roads.The rainfall event far exceeded the volume of the 1/100-year design flood, ranging at probability levels of 1/1000 years or more. The volume of the landslide amounted to 32 hectares and the height of the gravitational slide of the steep edge was 8 - 10 meters, with the total volume up to 1 mln m³, with an average width of the landslide of 350 meters.
